  • Abstract:
The decoding of the human genome in February 2001 has been celebrated as an essential breakthrough towards a deeper understanding of the foundations of life. However, it also became apparent that the broader context in which the human genome is embedded still remains to be discovered. Thus the enterprise of comprehending and classifying this new knowledge has only just begun.

Has the decoding of the human genome brought about a new era of the life sciences? What implications does this new knowledge have for our understanding of ourselves? Can we transcend the boundaries which until now have left us no choice but to accept our genetically inherited nature?

These questions denote a challenge regarding knowledge and comprehension, as well as the self-interpretation and the self-limitation of man. The forthcoming years will be devoted to a search for the answers. Accepting this challenge will require not only a new dialogue within the sciences and humanities, but also an open debate within society as a whole.
